Agilent 4100 MP-AES

Microwave Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (MP-AES) represents a completely new elemental analysis technique that has been designed to improve analytical performance and productivity, while decreasing operating costs by eliminating the flammable and/or expensive gas requirements used in typical elemental analysis techniques. The Nitrogen based plasma operates from a compressed air supply and Nitrogen generator, resulting in a significant reduction in operating costs and reduced infra structure costs. In addition, the state-of-the-art design of the Agilent 4100 MP-AES reduces the number of costly consumables such as hollow cathode lamps used in Atomic Absorption techniques.

The MP-AES technique produces superior linear dynamic range, detection limits and analysis speed compared to conventional flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Based on an atomic emission technique, this elemental analysis technique produces simpler spectra than ICP-OES and greater sensitivity than flame AAS.

This webinar presents an overview of the MP-AES technique, hardware, software and its capabilities. Performance is demonstrated for a range of sample types including examples from the geochemical, petrochemical, agricultural and environmental areas.

Dr Doug Shrader Biography

Doug received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Montana State University in 1973. His research under Dr. Ray Woodriff involved improvement and application of constant temperature graphite furnace AA instrumentation. Doug joined Varian Analytical Instruments as a field applications chemist in 1973. He managed Varian's Atomic Absorption Resource Center and held positions as AA product manager and marketing manager. Since 1995, Doug has been involved with AA, ICP and more recently, ICP-MS marketing. He currently is focused on market development, promotion and support for Agilent atomic spectroscopy products.

With four decades of experience, Doug has worked extensively on methods development, particularly for graphite furnace and vapor generation techniques. Innumerable invited and submitted papers have been presented at regional, national and international scientific meetings on various AA, ICP and ICP-MS topics.

Doug is a member of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and the American Chemical Society. He was presented the Chicago SAS Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and the National SAS Distinguished Service Award in 2002.

Dr Craig Taylor Biography

Craig received his BSc(Hons.) in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Hull, UK. He subsequently started his career as an Applications Chemist working in a number of routine environmental laboratories, working with AAS, ICP-OES and ICP-MS. He later relocated to Melbourne, Australia, where he joined Varian, now Agilent Technologies, as a Product Specialist for the Atomic portfolio. Craig then joined the NPD team working on the development of the MP-AES product where he was integral to the team tasked with bringing this revolutionary new product to market. This first-hand experience led to Craig being recently appointed Product Marketing Manager for the MP-AES product line.
