Mass Spectrometry Bibliography for Beginners

This listing is intended for absolute beginners in using mass spectrometry. The author Tony Mallet (A.Mallet@gre.ac.uk) would appreciate any additions, suggestions etc.

Internet

www.spectroscopyNOW.com. From Base Peak (the mass spec channel) go to the Education sub-section. There are a number of instructional items as well as a bibliography and useful links to other sites. From this site you can also access a large number of academic mass spec. labs; look under the ?LINKS' tab. Many of these sites contain tutorial pages (e.g. www.astbury.leeds.ac.uk/Facil/MStut/mstutorial.htm). National mass spec societies are also linked e.g. www.bmss.org.uk is the British MS society web page.

Books

Mass Spectrometry

Mass Spectrometry for Biotechnology, G. Siuzdak, Academic Press, 1996. {The best text for introductory studies}.

Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry.  Bob Ardrey, Wiley 2003. {Good modern text on the linking of HPLC to MS}.

Mass Spectrometry, Principles and Applications. De Hoffman and van Stroobant. 2nd ed., Wiley 2001.   {Good modern overall textbook}.

LC/MS Applications in Drug Development. M S. Lee, Wiley 2002. {Review of the applications of MS in the Pharmaceutical Industry}.

Interpretation of Mass Spectra. F W McLafferty and F Turecek, 4th ed., University Science Books, 1993. {The classical text on ms fragmentation}.

Principles and Practice of Biological Mass Spectrometry. C Dass, Wiley 2001. {Good survey of the field}.

Mass Spectrometry of Proteins and Peptides. J.R. Chapman ed. Humana Press. 2000 {Multi-author articles; up to date practical details}.

Quantitative Mass Spectrometry. B.J. Millard., Wiley 1977. {This is still the only book on the subject and badly needs to be replaced by a modern text.  Best advice for up-to-date methods is to scan the literature e.g. Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry where many research results arising from pharmaceutical enterprises will be found. See also the reference below.}

Chromatography

Practical Laboratory Skills Training Guide: High Performance Liquid Chromatography. E. Prichard, The Royal Society of Chemistry, 2003.

Capillary Electrochromatography (RSC Chromatography Monographs). K.D. Bartle (Editor), P. Myers (Editor). The Royal Society of Chemistry 2001

Troubleshooting HPLC Systems: A Bench Manual. P. Sadek. John Wiley & Sons Inc 1999

Practical Laboratory Skills Training Guide: Gas Chromatography. E. Prichard, B. Stuart. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2003

Practical High Performance Liquid Chromatography. V. Meyer, Wiley 1999 {A thoroughly updated edition of Veronika Meyer's classic on HPLC, this practical book promises to remain the standard in the field.}
