In March 2016, Shimadzu launched the ICPMS-2030 Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, the company’s first global ICPMS platform.

Shimadzu has been involved in ICP-OES since the conception of the technique in the late 1970ies (ICPQ-100 in 1977). Shimadzu also has a proven track in ICPMS technology and has achieved a leading role in the global market with Asia as the target area so far.

Excellent sensitivity with minimum spectral interference

The ICPMS-2030 is one of the smallest ICPMS platforms available today. Due to several features, it offers peace of mind both to the users of the system and to laboratory managers with strict budgets to manage.

The ICPMS-2030 is designed for high stability, excellent sensitivity and low interference. The optimized internal structure including the newly-developed octopole collision cell enables analysis at excellent sensitivity with minimum spectral interference. The sample injection unit and interface where ionized atoms go through are easy to remove and maintain.

Analysis in a wide range of fields

The instrument can also be connected to Shimadzu ion chromatography systems to support analysis in a wide range of fields. Since Shimadzu can also provide the chromatography hardware, an additional strong point is that the complete configuration can be controlled from one software platform: LabSolutions ICPMS. Other coupling techniques are possible as well, such as Laser Ablation. To optimize its application work, Shimadzu has a Cetac Laser Ablation unit permanently available in its Laboratory World facilities in Duisburg, Germany.

Significantly reduced amount of work

Shimadzu's proprietary “Development Assistant and Diagnosis Assistant functions” reduce users' burdens and improve reliability of data. For example, when performing quantitative analysis on a new sample, users previously needed to

  • find the ions that interfere with spectra such as isobaric ions, oxide ions, and bivalent ions
  • select the optimum mass number of the elements to be measured
  • determine the calibration curve sample concentration.

However, when applying the “Development Assistant" function, users can simply perform qualitative analysis on a representative sample among the measurement samples and select the elements to be measured. The software then sets the suitable analysis conditions automatically. When performing routine analysis using the predetermined conditions, “Diagnosis Assistant” checks automatically for spectral interference and indicates if problems are occurring. This function significantly reduces the amount of work needed to check data, and improves the reliability of measurement results.

Minimized running costs

The ICPMS-2030 features low running cost due to reduced flowrate of argon gas through the mini torch and the Eco mode. A unique mini-torch plasma system applies technologies accumulated in the development of ICP emission spectrometers. Because of this system, the flowrate of argon gas necessary to generate plasma is minimized. The Eco mode automatically reduces the argon gas flowrate even further during standby; RF power is lowered and no materials are aspirated.

In addition, the use of 99.95 % purity argon gas is possible. Analysis can therefore be performed with reasonably priced technical argon gas for industrial applications instead of the expensive 99.999 % high purity argon gas generally used.

Software platform provides connectivity with international regulations

Shimadzu’s LabSolutions platform provides Data Base (DB) and Client Server (CS) connectivity ensuring compliance with regulations concerning electronic record keeping and electronic signatures, such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11, and regulations stipulated by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (ERES regulations). It is also equipped with functions to support audit trail and robust security required by the regulations for reliable data management. The LabSolutions DB/CS platform also supports networking: ICP-MS, HPLC, GC, UV, FTI, RF, and other units in a laboratory can be networked for integrated data management..

Some typical applications

The ICPMS-2030 is primarily designed to respond to the ICH-Q3D guidelines for elemental impurities in pharmaceutical products. The ICH-Q3D specifies allowable limits of daily intake of 24 elements of toxicological concern, and requires highly sensitive and precise measurement of such elements. The ICPMS-2030 satisfies these requirements with ppt level sensitivity while offering FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliance, automated analytical method development function.

US pharmacopoeia indicates limits of elemental impurities (USP<232>) and detection technique by ICP-MS (USP<233>), which will apply as of January 2018. In USP <735>, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is adopted as general analytical method. For these demands, Shimadzu offers total solution for elemental impurities analysis from screening without sample preparation by the EDX-7000/8000, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometers, to high-sensitive and precision analysis with the ICPMS-2030. Atomic Absorption (AA-7000 Series) and ICP-OES (ICPE-9800 Series) complete the elemental analysis family, giving Shimadzu a unique position in the market with the full range of possibilities from a single supplier.

Many applications for the ICPMS_2030 are also found in the food market be found . Focal point in this market is the simultaneous evaluation of nutritional elements present in high concentrations (Na, K, Ca, Mg…) combined with the evaluation of trace and toxic elements in very low concentrations (Pb, Cd, As, Hg, Th, Se…). Looking at the food market in Europe, there is a clear dominance by beverage producers: Breweries, dairy producers, drinking water producers, distilleries and wine makers make up a significant part of the market. Conclusion

The ICPMS-2030 provides peace of mind on all levels: The software is user-friendly, offers assistant functions to those with less experience and is backed by a central software platform for compliancy. Running costs set a new benchmark with low argon consumption and quality demand, easy to maintain hardware and Shimadzu’s highly appraised level of service and support.
