The success of combination therapy for partial stroke victims to improve movement of the upper limbs has been assessed by MRI scanning of the brain. Scientists in Japan had devised a treatment strategy for patients with partial paralysis on one side of the body. It involves low-frequency magnetic stimulation of the nonlesional hemisphere in the brain and intensive occupational therapy every day. Progress of the therapy was followed by comparing functional MRI scans of the brain at admission and discharge using blood oxygenation level-dependent function imaging.

The scans showed that the joint therapy can improve upper limb movement by producing beneficial reorganisation of the lesional hemisphere, as reported in International Journal of Stroke. This is the side of the brain that was affected by the stroke. The time from the onset of stroke to the beginning of this therapy ranged from 1.4-19.5 years, so it appears that these beneficial changes are possible in chronic stroke patients.
