Environmental NMR – the early years

Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry, 2015, 53, 635-647
Caroline M. Preston

Abstract: A personal viewpoint of the development of environmental NMR spectroscopy is presented from its beginnings when it was applied to the analysis of soil humic acids. The use of 1H, 13C, 15N and 31P NMR spectroscopy in the solution state and 13C NMR in the solid state are discussed in detail, with special emphasis on environmental compound such as soil organic matter, lignins, pesticides and contaminants. The kinds of problems encountered with the developing instrumentation are described and the advantages brought in by various instrumental developments are illustrated.
