Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the first research-grade FTIR spectrometer which is operated by one-touch technology. The Nicolet iS50 is designed to be fully upgradeable from a simple FTIR benchtop instrument to a fully automated system using purpose-built modules and integrated analytical software that will allow it to operate from the far-IR to near-IR regions.

The automatic beamsplitter exchanger allows users to switch from one technique to another at the touch of a button, accessing ATR, Raman and NIR techniques while eliminating manual operator errors and the risk of damage while exchanging components. The integrated diamond ATR allows IR spectra to be recorded in a few seconds and an in-sample-compartment FT-Raman feature includes a video microstage for point-and-shoot Raman spectroscopy with no fluorescence.

The instrument is capable of analysing complex mixtures following pre-separation by gas chromatography or thermogravimetric analysis with the aid of new OMNIC Mercury software which automatically isolates and identifies compounds.

In addition, Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the Nicolet iS50R which is a full-featured research variant of the Nicolet iS50 designed for advanced applications including vibrational circular dichroism, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and time-resolved spectroscopy.
