GE Healthcare has agreed to purchase Thermo Fisher Scientific’s cell culture media and sera, gene modulation and magnetic beads businesses for $1.06 billion. The sale of these businesses was a condition set by the European Commission for approving Thermo Fisher’s acquisition of Life Technologies (see Thermo Fisher gets European approval).

Forming part of Thermo Fisher’s Analytical Technologies segment, the three businesses include product ranges such as the HyClone cell culture and media range for producing biopharmaceuticals and the Sera-Mag range of magnetic beads, which are used for isolating and extracting proteins, nucleic acids and other analytes. These businesses will now be incorporated into GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences division.

GE Healthcare says that the businesses provide a ‘strong strategic fit’ and will enable it to expand and accelerate the development of innovative ‘end-to-end’ technologies for cell biology research, cell therapy and for the manufacture of innovative biological medicines and vaccines. It anticipates completing the acquisition early in 2014.

‘We look forward to the HyClone cell culture and other businesses joining the GE family,’ said Kieran Murphy, president and CEO of GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences Division. ‘They are a great fit with our key areas of focus, and bring exciting new technologies, enhanced manufacturing capabilities as well as a great group of talented people to help grow our business.’

Although it hasn’t yet received approval from the US Federal Trade Commission, Thermo Fisher still anticipates that its acquisition of Life Technologies will complete in early 2014.
