Determination of hexavalent chromium in drinking water according to a U.S. EPA Method
Date: Mar 6, 2013
Author: J. Gandhi, J. Mathew, E. Prince, and K.M. Ruth
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography / UV, Visible, Optical
Have you seen the movie “Erin Brockovich”? It is based on a true story and tells the eponymous protagonist`s fight against a U.S. energy corporation that had poisoned the local water supply with toxic chromium(VI). Chromium(VI) compounds are highly water-soluble and oxidizing and are considered toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Chromatographic determinations imply anion-exchange chromatography followed by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide postcolumn chemistry according to U.S. EPA Method 218.7. This poster looks at...

Author: A. Wille, M. Espinosa, J. Chesa-Jiménez, B. Galliker, and A. Steinbach
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
Positron emission tomography (PET) is one of the most powerful noninvasive diagnostic tools for tracing organ functioning. Quality control of the short-lived PET-radiopharmaceuticals is challenging, not least because of the tough time limits, the radiation issue and the near nanomole radiotracer quantities produced. This poster presents a versatile multi-channel radio IC system that controls the production of the radionuclide [18F]fluoride (precursor) and the two radiotracers synthesized from it,...
Read MoreTransition metals in feedwater using post-column reaction and subsequent UV/Vis detection
Date: Mar 6, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
Feedwater for steam generation in boiling water reactors (BWR) needs to be analyzed for corrosion products. Presence of transition metals, mainly nickel and iron, indicates corrosion problems. Traces of these ions are determined using Inline Preconcentration (MiPCT). After separation, post-column reaction with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) allows VIS detection at 510 nm.
Read MoreAnions in KOH (50%) applying Inline Neutralization and intelligent Partial Loop Injection Technique (MiPT)
Date: Mar 6, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
Metrohm Inline Neutralization is a well-established sample preparation technique for anion determinations in hydroxide solutions. The intelligent Partial Loop Injection Technique (MiPT) allows to calibrate the system with one single standard solution and to adjust the injection volume according to the anion concentrations in the sample. This method has been successfully applied to anion analysis in potassium hydroxide (50 and 85%) and in potassium carbonate solutions (83%).
Read MoreOnline analysis of trace anions in power plant water matrices
Date: Mar 6, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
A setup that allows online sampling is crucial for immediate and contaminationfree analysis of power plant water samples. This application recommends a setup that facilitates simultaneous anion/cation determinations. Automated inline sample preparation combines variable preconcentration (MiPCT) and calibration with a single multi-ion standard.

Date: Mar 5, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography / HPLC
The determination of the different sugar ingredients in food is required for the list of ingredients and thus indispensable for correct product declaration. The use of the 815 Robotic Soliprep for LC significantly facilitates sample preparation: After weighing the sample, the Soliprep adds water and homogenizes the sample. The resulting extract is automatically filtered through a syringe filter and subsequently injected into the IC system. Pulsed amperometric detection is applied to determine the sugar...
Read MoreAnalysis of an ion exchanger applying Metrohm Combustion IC
Date: Mar 5, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography / Ion Exchange
The production of ultrapure water for the pharmaceutical or semiconductor industry requires high-quality ion exchangers. Metrohm Combustion IC is an invaluable tool for testing the purity of anion-exchanger materials. The initial sample was wet and had been dried at 105 °C in a special oven with waste air removal.
Read MoreCations and amines in the water-steam cycle
Date: Mar 5, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
Water in steel-based cooling systems requires a pH value slightly above 7 to prevent corrosion. Often ammonium or organic amines are applied for pH adjustement. This application shows the separation of typical amines besides inorganic cations. Sample preconcentration applies combined Inline Preconcentration and Matrix Elimination (MiPCT-ME).
Read MoreCopper, Nickel, zinc and common cations in the water-steam cycle of a boiling water reactor (BWR)
Date: Mar 5, 2013
Author: Metrohm
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
Water chemistry of the water-steam cycle is crucial for maintaining plant reliability and for ensuring optimal plant operational conditions. Impurities such as corrosion products in ionic, colloidal, or oxide forms are ubiquitous in feedwater, condensate, and reactor coolant. This application shows the determination of sub-ppb levels of Cu, Ni, Zn and standard cations (e.g., Na+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+) in the water-steam cycle of a BWR.
Read MoreSemi-continuous determination of anions, cations, and heavy metals in aerosols using PILS-IC-VA
Date: Mar 5, 2013
Author: N. Harihara Subramanian, C. Emmenegger, and M. Kalcher
Product Type(s): Ion Chromatography
The collection of representative aerosol samples and the therewith associated analysis are still the most challenging parts in air monitoring. This poster presents an approach that couples a Particle-Into-Liquid-Sampler (PILS) to a dual-channel ion chromatograph (IC) for measurement of aerosol anions and cations and a voltammetric measuring stand (VA) to determine the heavy metals.
