Rechargeable lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are key components for portable electronics, medical devices, industrial equipment, and automobiles. They are lightweight, provide high energy density, and recharge without memory effects. Much research has been spent on improving product safety, cycle life, and product performance, yet understanding fundamental processes and degradation mechanism in LIBs remains a challenge. Understanding key degradation processes can lead to enhancing battery performance, improvements in product safety, and insight into component failure mechanisms.

A decrease in lithium ion battery performance and cycle life results from the interaction between the electrolyte, anode, and cathode. The anode, in particular, undergoes a variety of degradation mechanisms with the electrolyte when catalyzed by contaminants, voltage effects, or elevated temperatures to produce lithium alkyl carbonates, polyphosphates, and other inorganic species. This presentation will discuss how ion chromatography (IC), inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP–OES), gas chromatography–MS (GC–MS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy have helped optimize trace organic and inorganic analysis of lithium ion battery electrolytes.
