As a consequence of their widespread use, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been released in the environment where they can act as stressors towards biota.

For the assessment of their environmental impact, single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is an ideal solution for the determination of concentration and size distribution of TiO2 NPs in different water samples.

SP-ICP-MS requires minimal sample preparation, offers superior sensitivity, and enables simultaneous characterization of analyte in nanoscale and dissolved forms.

In our study, suspensions of commercially available TiONPs (anatase and rutile) were sufficiently diluted (ng L-1 level) and short integration times (10 ms or less) used in order to measure the intensity of single particle as a single pulse. The procedure was applied to the sizing and quantification of TiO2 NPs in river water samples.

Janja Vidmar: Biography

Janja Vidmar has been Young Researcher at Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI, Ljubljana, Slovenia) for the last two years, working in the Department of Environmental Sciences. Since October 2013, after graduating from the University of Ljubljana, Janja was a PhD student at JS International postgraduate school. She is involved in development of analytical procedures for detection and characterization of metal-based nanoparticles in the environmental and biological samples, using mostly single-particle ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS.

Alain Desprez: Biography

Before joining Agilent in 2014 as an Application Engineer for ICP-MS, Alain Desprez studied Environmental Chemical Engineering and obtained a PhD for his work on petroleum products characterization using SEC-ICP-MS and FT-ICR MS.
