With global concerns about food quality and food safety continuing to garner attention, it is important for both manufacturers and regulatory bodies to have robust analytical instrumentation and methods to ensure accurate and precise results. For the measurement of inorganic elements and nutrients, sample preparation can be of critical importance to the quality of the analysis. Here we discuss the process of sample preparation and analysis, the tools and techniques for the measurement of inorganic elements in food, and inorganic speciation of metals.
As part of this webinar, we will go through the process of analyzing food samples from sample preparation to the analytical instrumentation used to test for trace metals and nutritional elements in food. Attendees will learn best practices for sample preparation, the typical sample preparation required for food analysis, and the advantages of using different types of sample preparation for food samples. In addition, we will walk through the different analytical techniques available for food analysis and their advantages. Using specific examples, attendees will learn the capabilities of the various technologies to analyze metals in food.
Attendees will also get the opportunity to learn about speciation of inorganic arsenic present in foods, specifically using the LC-ICP-MS technique. Here we will discuss the results of the sample analysis and associated method validation tests from a new method developed by PerkinElmer based on ion interaction chromatography applied to apple juice and rice samples.

Helmut Ernstberger: Biography
Helmut Ernstberger is a Senior Scientist at PerkinElmer, responsible for inorganic applications in food, including ICP-MS and speciation by LC-ICP-MS. Before joining PerkinElmer he was lecturer, associate research scientist and analytical laboratory manager in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University. He also had worked as project leader for research and development at Anzaplan, an analytical laboratory and engineering consultancy in Germany. He studied chemistry at Regensburg University, Germany, and completed his postgraduate education and a post doc in the UK. He obtained an MSc in analytical chemistry and PhD in environmental chemistry, both from Aberdeen University.
Nick Spivey: Biography
Nick Spivey is an Inorganic Spectroscopy Applications Scientist at PerkinElmer, responsible for developing applications and methods for atomic spectroscopy. Prior to PerkinElmer, he was a method chemist at KMG chemicals and a senior quality engineer at General Chemical. He studied chemistry at the University of the Pacific where he completed his Bachelors.
