The current state of mass spectrometry in Russia has been reviewed, detailing the changes and advances that grew following the establishment of the Russian Federation. This account, compiled by Vladimir Zaikin and Alexander Sysoev, has been published in European Journal of Mass Spectrometry.

They describe how the mass spectrometry community has concentrated on two particular aspects: the development of new instrumentation, especially multiple reflecting time-of-flight spectrometers and the application of mass spectrometry to solving chemical problems.

Despite the exodus of many mass spectrometrists following the breakdown of the Soviet Union, there is still a vibrant community that is making a strong contribution to mass spectrometry growth.
