Waters has acquired the technology behind the 'intelligent knife', a mass spectrometry device for real-time diagnostics during surgery.

The technology is known as rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) and Waters acquired it from the Hungarian company MediMass (see Surgical mass spec: Intelligent knife finds tumour margins in real time). Waters had already been working with MediMass, as well as with Imperial College London in the UK, on advancing the REIMS technology for health science applications.

'While showing promise across many applications, REIMS technology significantly strengthens Waters’ technology position within Health Sciences,' said Rohit Khanna, vice-president, worldwide marketing and informatics, for Waters Division. 'This technology acquisition along with our recent agreement with Prosolia Inc for the exclusive rights to desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) technology in clinical applications are key components in our burgeoning Heath Sciences initiative.'
