The Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP) of the UK Food Standards Agency will host an open workshop on Novel Foods on November 20, 2013. Novel foods and food ingredients are defined as those which "do not have a significant history of consumption within the European Union before 15 May 1997."

The workshop is open to anyone, including members of the public, and will cover two main topics:

  • the evaluation of traditional foods from other parts of the world
  • assessing the additive effects of novel ingredients in food

While discussion is limited to these subjects, questions will be taken from the floor on other subjects in an open discussion as the end. Questions are invited on the scientific procedures that are currently used to assess novel and genetically modified food and the openness of the systems employed.
