The new Exactive bench top LC-MS instrument has high resolution, accurate mass and fast scanning capabilities which make it ideally suited for both screening and quantification of compounds in complex samples. Resolutions of up 100,000 ensures the highest selectivity and allow specific detection of target compounds in the presence of complex chemical interferences from a variety of biological, food or environmental matrices. The Exactive simply generates full scan mass data which provides complete sample information and which can be used to simultaneously quantify target analytes and identify unknowns.

During this presentation we will describe the overall system performance and specifications together with a brief review of the OrbitrapTM technology used. Specific examples of how high resolution mass spectrometry simplifies quantification of hormones in meat products, pesticides in animal food matrix, and drug metabolites will be discussed. In addition we will show how full scan MS data can be simultaneously used to both identify and confirm the presence of target compounds in a variety of complex samples.
