The force of Orbitrap can thwart doping from the dark side of sport

Date: May 2, 2018

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

The use of anabolic steroids by athletes for doping purposes remains a serious problem, but existing analytical methods tend to give poor detection of some steroids, particularly novel ‘designer steroids’, which are often not found in databases. Researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Thermo Fisher (Austin, Texas) devised a new method using GC and an Orbitrap mass spectrometer to detect both known and novel anabolic steroids, along with other doping compounds.

Journal Highlight: Unprecedented ionization processes in mass spectrometry provide missing link between ESI and MALDI

Date: Apr 9, 2018

Author: spectroscopyNOW

Intact, highly‐charged protein ions have been formed on high vacuum TOF mass spectrometers in linear and reflectron modes by effective matrix removal from sample surfaces and charged clusters, suggesting mechanistic links to traditional ionization methods of electrospray ionization and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization.

Advanced forensic fingerprinting: Imaging from cyanoacrylate-fumed prints

Date: Apr 1, 2018

Author: Steve Down

The classical forensic fingerprint technique of cyanoacrylate fuming is compatible with mass spectrometry imaging, say US researchers, who used an orbitrap system rather than time-of-flight techniques to improve performance and detect endogenous and exogenous substances.
