Metabolic tissue imaging: Ambient mass spectrometry for global coverage

Date: Nov 15, 2018

Author: Steve Down

A wide range of metabolites have been mapped in tissue using ambient mass spectrometry, which could help to divulge molecular processes and pathological mechanisms and lead to the discovery of new biomarkers.

Insulin analysis: Dried blood spots

Date: Nov 2, 2018

Author: Steve Down

An LC/MS method has been developed for the analysis of insulin and its synthetic analogues from dried blood spots, which could be applied to doping control, forensic and pharmacological fields.

Nerve agent detection: Derivatisation for paper spray mass spectrometry

Date: Oct 15, 2018

Author: Steve Down

The G-series chemical warfare agents have been analysed by flowing vapour samples through a treated cartridge to trap and derivatise them for paper spray mass spectrometry.

Journal Highlight: Novel ionization processes for use in mass spectrometry: 'Squeezing' nonvolatile analyte ions from crystals and droplets

Date: Oct 8, 2018

Author: spectroscopyNOW

This perspective examines the mechanisms, instrumentation and applications of matrix-assisted ionisation, laserspray ionization and solvent-assisted ionization with small portable mass spectrometers, (ultra)high resolution MS, automation, ion mobility spectrometry, MS/MS using advanced CID and/or advanced fragmentation technology such as electron transfer dissociation.

MS/MS measures metabolites from marijuana

Date: Oct 3, 2018

Author: Ryan De Vooght-Johnson

Detection of cannabinoids in hair is a common method of drug testing, but improved chromatographic techniques are needed to analyse cannabinoid metabolites, which tend to be present at very low levels. Scientists from the University of Cologne and Gerstel GmbH (Mülheim, Germany) developed a new GC-MS/MS to quantify a range of cannabinoids, including metabolite compounds.

Hospital air: Chemical and microbiological assessment

Date: Oct 1, 2018

Author: Steve Down

Indoor air of two French hospitals contains the same types of contaminants, including volatile organic compounds from inside and outside the buildings, microorganisms and particulates. The findings will help to establish indoor air quality recommendations for healthcare facilities.

Hypertension prediction: Metabolomics model

Date: Sep 15, 2018

Author: Steve Down

Essential hypertension can be predicted by a mass spectrometric test that measures the amounts of six metabolites in dried blood spots, which will help clinicians to diagnose the condition when the recognised symptoms have not appeared.

Journal Highlight: Optimization of extraction and analytical protocol for mass spectrometry‐based metabolomics analysis of hepatotoxicity

Date: Sep 10, 2018

Author: spectroscopyNOW

An optimised LC/MS‐based metabolomics protocol for extraction and analysis of endogenous metabolites from liver tissue during hepatotoxicity provides high reliability and reproducibility for polar and nonpolar metabolites.

Alternative cigarettes: Prison teabacco hybrids analysed

Date: Sep 1, 2018

Author: Steve Down

An analysis of teabacco, the substitute tobacco made from tea leaves and nicotine lozenges that is prepared and produced by prison inmates, has uncovered unhealthy levels of toxic metals in the smoke but fewer harmful organic compounds than from normal cigarettes.
