Calcium isotope analysis by mass spectrometry

Date: Nov 8, 2010

Author:

The figures of merit of analytical methods and instrumentation used for the isotope analysis of calcium are reviewed and their limitations are critically assessed. Mass spectrometric methods applied to precise stable isotope analysis and to the determination of 41Ca are described, followed by a short summary of selected applications.

Transforming personalised medicine: metabolomics by high-resolution mass spectrometry brings it one step closer

Date: Nov 1, 2010

Author: Steve Down

A metabolomics study on human plasma accomplished using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry detected 2000 metabolites accurately and rapidly, a group of which were able to distinguish one individual from another. The ease, speed and accuracy of the approach suggest that it could be useful in the pursuit of personalised medicine.

Legal highs contain illegal drugs: cathinones are the main culprits

Date: Oct 15, 2010

Author: Steve Down

A number of legal highs purchased online in the UK that were said to contain legal substitutes for cathinones and other drugs that were banned in April 2010, still contain cathinones, say researchers. These findings have important implications for the drug users, who may be unaware of the subsequent legal and health risks.

Elucidation of the mass fragmentation pathways of potato glycoalkaloids and aglycons using Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Date: Oct 11, 2010

Author:

The mass fragmentation of potato glycoalkaloids, alpha-solanine and alpha-chaconine, and the aglycons, demissidine and solasodine were studied using the Orbitrap Fourier transform (FT) mass spectrometer.

Tracking underground fuel pollutants

Date: Oct 1, 2010

Author: Steve Down

Fossil fuel pollutants that have leaked underground can be mapped and tracked without bringing samples to the surface by using a long heated probe fitted with a Peltier freeze trap for preconcentration before transfer to a GC/MS system.

Fading fingerprints

Date: Sep 15, 2010

Author: Steve Down

The initial composition of fingerprints and their variation over time has been studied by GC/MS, in an initial study to assess the possibility of dating fingerprints to aid police investigations.

Identification and quantification of 30 antipsychotics in blood using LC-MS/MS

Date: Sep 13, 2010

Author:

An LC-MS/MS method was developed for the quantification of 30 antipsychotic drugs in postmortem blood, using electrospray ionisation and multiple reaction monitoring.

Ultrasound ionisation

Date: Sep 1, 2010

Author: Steve Down

A simple method for ionising peptides, proteins and other biomolecules for mass spectrometric analysis relies solely on ultrasound emitted from a piezoelectric device, producing largely singly protonated molecules by the cavitation process.

E-food is safe to eat

Date: Aug 15, 2010

Author: Steve Down

Ready-to-eat food that has been irradiated with electron beams to kill pathogens is safe from mutagenic heterocyclic aromatic amines, say researchers in Spain, who devised a novel LC/MS method for their measurement at low ppb detection limits.
