Electrospray: From ions in solution to ions in the gas phase, what we know now

Date: Jan 11, 2010

Author:

The various processes involved in the conversion of ions present in the solution to ions in the gas phase in electrospray and nanospray mass spectrometry are discussed in detail.

Space dust spectroscopy

Date: Jan 4, 2010

Author: Steve Down

The hyper-velocity impacts of organic micrograins have been studied by mass spectrometry in a dust accelerator to determine the species produced. The results are important for the in situ identification of organic compounds in space dust.

Well spotted

Date: Dec 15, 2009

Author: Steve Down

The prenatal exposure of newborns to perfluoroalkyl chemicals has been assessed by LC/MS using dried blood spots collected routinely after births in the USA. Almost 100 babies tested had ppm levels of the chemicals in their blood.

Detection of the arylpropionamide-derived selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) S-4 (Andarine) in a black-market product

Date: Dec 7, 2009

Author:

The SARM drug candidate andarine, which is available over the Internet, was detected for the first time, using an LC/MS method. The performance-enhancing qualities and the black-market availability of SARMs makes them viable targets for misuse in the athletic community.

Collaring collagen for mammalian identification

Date: Dec 1, 2009

Author: Steve Down

Collagen from bone fragments has been used to identify the mammalian species by mass spectrometry, say UK scientists, who applied the method successfully to modern and archaeological bone, as well as rendered meat and bone meal.

The past is coming back to haunt us

Date: Nov 15, 2009

Author: Steve Down

The accelerated melting of an Alpine glacier induced by global warming is releasing trapped persistent organic chemicals into local lakes at historically high rates, say Swiss researchers.

Generic sample preparation and dual polarity LC-TOFMS for high-throughput screening in doping analysis

Date: Nov 9, 2009

Author:

A comprehensive screening method for doping agents in human urine is presented, based on SPE and liquid chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, covering most of the compound groups in the WADA list of prohibited substances.

Houseplants as air fresheners

Date: Nov 1, 2009

Author: Steve Down

Two common houseplants have removed volatile aldehydes and ketones from the air at typical concentrations encountered indoors. The results help to support the premise that plants could be used to clean indoor air.

Wine without frontiers

Date: Oct 15, 2009

Author: Steve Down

Tempranillo wines from Spain and Australia have been distinguished from each other using a mass spectrometry-based electronic nose to detect the volatile components in the headspace.

Interpretation of urinary concentrations of pseudoephedrine and its metabolite cathine in relation to doping control

Date: Oct 12, 2009

Author:

Analysis of 116 in-competition urine samples containing pseudoephedrine in 2007 and 2008, revealed that 66% had elevated concentrations of pseudoephedrine. The researchers recommended that WADA reintroduce pseudoephedrine to the prohibited list.
