IC/MS for black powder substitutes
Date: Oct 1, 2009
Author: Steve Down
Black powder substitutes containing ascorbic acid as a fuel can be detected before and after firing by ion chromatography/mass spectrometry. The technique recognises the inorganic anions and their combustion products, as well as the ascorbic acid degradation products, in a single run.

The capabilities of four ionisation techniques used in conjunction with capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry have been compared for the profiling of low-level impurities in drugs.
Read MoreFrom large analogical instruments to small digital black boxes: 40 years of progress in mass spectrometry and its role in proteomics. Part II 1985-2000
Date: Sep 14, 2009
Author:
This paper reviews the mass spectrometry timeline of events from 1985 to 2000, stopping where MS made significant contributions to protein chemistry or where the development of new instrumentation for MS represented a major advance for peptide and protein work.

Author: Steve Down
A fledgling ambient ionisation technique using a low-temperature plasma has been demonstrated for the mass spectrometric analysis of olive oil in a proof-of-principle study of its application to complex non-aqueous matrices.

A novel mass spectrometer based on ICPMS with a time-of-flight detector has been used to measure up to 20 antigens in single cells from leukaemia patients. It could radically change the way in which clinical samples are analysed in the future, allowing the simultaneous detection of many disease markers in a single experiment.

Date: Aug 10, 2009
Author:
Non-radioactive chromium-53 labelling and mass spectrometry was used to investigate red cell volume (RCV) in Gabonese children with malaria. Although the red cell mass is depleted in malaria, the blood volume appears relatively well preserved.

Steroid levels in the saliva of chimpanzees vary diurnally and are strong indicators of circulating steroid levels, say Japanese researchers, using LC/MS for measurements. They hope to use the discovery to examine the causal relationships between steroid hormone levels and animal behaviour.

Three resinous samples collected from a wrecked 16th Century European ship in the Straights of Malacca have been characterised by GC/MS. They were all found to contain dammar resin but two were associated with other resins.

Date: Jul 13, 2009
Author:
The performances of acetonitrile, methanol and acetone were compared for the LC/MS analysis of peptides derived from model proteins. Comparison of the chromatograms using commercial software showed that acetone was superior.

Residual cyclohexanone in PVC plastic bags from commercial medical infusion sets has been detected and measured by a combination of proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry and ion/molecule reaction mass spectrometry. The techniques are fast and sensitive and could be set up for quality control of plastic medical devices.
