Professor Vernon Gibson has been appointed Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence in the UK to oversee its science and technology program. He will take up his appointment on July 2, 2012 and will replace the outgoing chief Professor Sir Mark Welland.
Currently visiting professor of chemistry at Imperial College London, Professor Gibson has been at the forefront of research in developing catalysts for organic polymeric reactions. He also serves as chief chemist at BP.
He said of his appointment: "I am tremendously honoured and privileged to be joining the Ministry of Defence as its Chief Scientific Adviser. I'm looking forward to addressing the science and technology challenges that will help shape the capability of our Armed Forces in the 21st century."
