Thermo Fisher Scientific has acquired the US company picoSpin, developers of the world’s first miniature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer.

Around the size of a shoebox, the picoSpin-45 offers all the capabilities of larger spectrometers but is around 70 times smaller than other devices of its type. It is ideally suited for academic, industrial and research applications where cost, space and maintenance requirements make typical NMR spectroscopy impractical, and recently won a 2012 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine.

picoSpin will be primarily integrated into Thermo Fisher Scientific's chemical analysis business, which forms part of its Analytical Technologies segment.
