Scientists in the USA have designed a novel nanoparticle that will be useful in a range of biomedical imaging and therapeutic applications. It is based on a polymer of polyethylene glycol and oligomers of the porphyrin pyropheophorbide-a and cholic acid which are 21 nm in size and full details of their preparation are given in Nature Communications.

The nanoparticles are capable of generating heat and singlet oxygen and releasing drugs at tumour sites, rendering them agents for simultaneous photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy and chemotherapy when they are illuminated at the appropriate wavelengths. They can also function as agents for near-infrared fluorescence imaging for cancer detection.

They can be chelated with gadolinium ions and delivered to tumours for MRI imaging. Alternatively, they can be dual-labelled with gadolinium ions and copper ions for positron emission tomography (PET) and PET-MRI at tumour sites.

Based on the biocompatibility, flexibility and performance, “this integrated nanomedicine platform shows great promise as a highly versatile multimodal theranostic agent against cancers,” declared the research team from University of California Davis, replacing the need for several different agents with just one.
