Animal-saving chips
Date: Jan 3, 2008
Author: David Bradley
Two new biochips could replace scores of animals currently used in toxicity testing of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, according to US researchers. Used together the DataChip and the MetaChip can reveal the potential toxicity of chemicals and drug candidates on various organs in the human body as well as detecting putative toxic metabolites.
Read MoreReversible photoswitching enables single-molecule fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy at high molecular concentration
Date: Dec 8, 2007
Author:
Photoswitchable markers have been employed to enable fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy at high molecular concentration, reversible photoswitching allowing precise control of the density of fluorescing entities.

Date: Dec 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
A new material that produces less background noise and higher contrast is being developed as a new fingerprinting powder for forensics. The highly fluorescent dye was synthesised using oleylamine combined with a perylene dianhydride compound and characterised by UV, NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopies before being loaded on to titanium dioxide nanoparticles.
Read MoreSwelling activation energy of kappa-carrageenan in its gel state: A fluorescence study
Date: Nov 8, 2007
Author:
A steady-state fluorescence technique was employed to study the swelling of kappa-carrageenan gels at various temperatures, using pyranine as a fluorescence probe.
Read MoreShedding light on an acid switch
Date: Nov 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy has been used to shed light on a novel supramolecular control mechanism in which a nanoscale molecular machine is driven by changes in pH. The molecular machine acts as a switch, flipping from one photoactive state to another in response to light by exploiting a proton transfer process in the same solution.
Read MoreOptical sensor for aliphatic amines uses the colorimetric and fluorescence responses of a smart textile
Date: Oct 8, 2007
Author:
A pH indicator has been developed based on the water-soluble dye benzo[de]anthracen-7-one applied to viscose fabric. It acts as a reversible colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for ammonia and aliphatic amines in buffered solution, changing from yellow to orange.
Read MorePredictable wine
Date: Oct 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
A simple tool for winemakers and researchers based on UV-vis spectroscopy allows them to predict levels of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, tannins, polymeric pigments, and iron-reactive phenols, in real-time and could lead to improved wine production methods.
Read MoreSpectroscopic studies of PVA films filled with a lanthanum/N-ethylmorpholine complex
Date: Sep 10, 2007
Author:
Poly(vinyl alcohol) films with different concentrations of lanthanum ions prepared by a casting technique have been characterised by optical absorption and transmission measurements.
Read MoreSweet nanoreactor
Date: Sep 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
A one-pot chemical reaction system based on nanoscopic capsules embedded in a polymer membrane has been devised by researchers in The Netherlands. The nanoreactor system allows cascade reactions to be carried out that would otherwise require multiple distinct reaction steps with time-consuming and wasteful separation and purification stages.
Read MoreFluorescence analysis of DOM in natural, waste and polluted waters - a review
Date: Aug 13, 2007
Author:
This article reviews the use of fluorescence spectroscopic techniques to measure the intrinsic fluorescence of organic matter and the application of fluorescent DOM analysis in marine waters, freshwaters and wastewaters.
