Iron soccerball unstitched
Date: Jun 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
A range of techniques including UV/Vis were used to characterise a new soccerball molybdenum capsule. The new capsules can be opened and closed by swapping their iron linkers for lanthanides.
Read MoreFluorescence spectroscopy of an in vitro model of human cervical precancer identifies neoplastic phenotype
Date: May 7, 2007
Author:
Organotypic epithelial raft culture were used as an in vitro model of cervical tissue to analyse changes in the fluorescence properties of surface squamous epithelium that are associated with the development of neoplastic disease.
Read MoreSunshine, it's no gas
Date: May 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
Sending astronauts to reignite the Sun, the premise of sci-fi feature Sunshine, is the least of our problems when we are currently faced with global warming, global terrorism, and global economic collapse. Nevertheless, astronomers are concerned about recent findings regarding the hot gas surrounding our star and its stellar neighbours. Put simply they cannot find these hot gases.
Read MoreProbing rotation dynamics of biomolecules using polarization based fluorescence microscopy
Date: Apr 9, 2007
Author:
Fluorescence polarization microscopy based on a two-photon fluorescence microscope was used to characterize the rotation dynamics and interactions of biomolecules.
Read MoreA pivotal moment for molecular scissors
Date: Apr 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
Circular dichroism and absorption spectroscopy studies reveal the properties of a pair of molecular scissors that can open and close in analogy to their macroscopic counterparts. The scissoring action occurs in response to ultraviolet light input; the first demonstration of such control. The molecular-scale scissors could be used to manipulate other smaller molecules or as drug delivery agent or to control proteins.
Read MoreData processing in metabolic fingerprinting by CE-UV: Application to urine samples from autistic children
Date: Mar 19, 2007
Author:
Although no biomarkers for autism could be determined in this paper, the general approach presented could also be applied to the processing of other data collected by electrophoresis with UV-Vis detection. Read more...

Date: Mar 1, 2007
Author: David Bradley
Single-molecule fluorescence polarization and "magnetic tweezers" could help scientists get a grip on viruses known as bacteriophages which attack and kill bacteria. The research could lead to a resurgence of interest in a potent treatment for bacterial infection.
Read MoreSpectroscopic investigation of humic substances in a tropical lake during a complete hydrological cycle
Date: Feb 12, 2007
Author:
Fluorescence and UV-VIS techniques were employed for the investigation of natural organic matter of a tropical lake.
Read MoreThe dark state of DNA
Date: Feb 2, 2007
Author: David Bradley
Shine ultraviolet light on single nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, and an unusual high-energy state is generated, according to research by US chemists. This is the first time such a "dark" energy state has been observed and has implications for understanding damage to DNA caused by sunlight.
Read MoreOn-line identification of phenolic compounds of Trifolium species using HPLC-UV-MS
Date: Jan 15, 2007
Author:
The genus Trifolium L. includes about 248 Leguminous species, many of which are important forage crops. In an ongoing search for new active compounds in the field of phytoestrogens, a simple HPLC-UV-MS method has been developed in order to identify phenolic compounds.
