Mass Spectral Libraries - Reproducibility in EI, API and Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Date: May 15, 2009

A number of publications have recently appeared in which attempts have been made to determine the reproducibility of tandem mass spectra libraries. For several decades libraries of EI spectra have been used successfully for compound identification, especially from GC-MS data, while, in contrast, many difficulties seem to be present in trying to achieve the same success for tandem mass spectrometry data. This short essay attempts to answer the question of why this difference should occur, what is it about...

A Simple Device for Cleaning Many NMR Tubes Simultaneously

Date: Oct 21, 2008

NMR tubes are widely used in organic chemistry. Cleaning a few tubes after use is not a big problem but cleaning hundreds of tubes is a demanding task in terms of time and use of solvents. Here is presented a simple nmr tube cleaner that can clean and dry hundreds of tubes in a short time with minimal exposure of the user to solvents. The tube cleaner is easily assembled from equipment normally present in the organic chemistry laboratory.

Atmospheric Pressure Ionisation of Small Molecules

Date: Nov 27, 2006

Author: Tony Mallet

Since the early 1980s many different and ingenious attempts have been made to achieve reliable and sensitive ionisation at atmospheric pressure in order to provide mass spectrometric data from molecules which were too involatile and thermally unstable to be submitted to probe or GC analysis. This article will address the application of ESI, ApCI and, to a lesser extent, the recent development of photoionisation (APPI), and direct desorption spray ionisation methods, as they are applied to small molecule...

Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry

Date: Oct 7, 2005

While even the best analytical techniques cannot rectify problems generated by sloppy sample preparation, this less "sexy" step between the point at which analytes are transferred from the sample matrix to a form suitable for analysis is often overlooked. Read a free chapter from "Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry " here.
