Peptide Hormones in Sports Drug Testing: Detection of Emerging Protein/Peptide Based Drugs by Means of LC-MS

Therapeutic proteins and peptides have emerged as one of the most important classes of new pharmaceuticals. Several drug candidates with potential performance-enhancing properties are currently in preclinical or clinical development. The current version of the WADA Prohibited List includes a variety of protein/peptide-based doping agents, some of which can be detected in biological samples by using immunological and mass spectrometry-based approaches.

Biowarfare agents: Toxin testing

Steve Down

Toxins that have been added to foods as chemical and biological warfare agents can be detected using a novel proteomics approach which bypasses the need for antibody-based isolation by employing isotope-labelled versions of the toxins.

Christmas cooks this year might be surprised to learn that raw turkey breast develops an off-odour following irradiation treatment designed to kill pathogens, say researchers in the US, who also studied the factors behind the accompanying change in colour.

Curiosity killed the cat—allegedly—but also allowed Sapiens to flourish. At the heart of humankind’s endless curiosity lies a labyrinth of data, verging on too complex and too vast for humankind to process. In response, scientists have handed their MS/MS data to silicon, to great success.

Ion source pressure plays a significant role in the process of ionization and the subsequent ion transmission inside a mass spectrometer. Pressurizing the ion source to a gas pressure greater than atmospheric pressure is a relatively new approach that aims to further improve the performance of atmospheric pressure ionization sources. A brief review on the development of super-atmospheric pressure ion sources, including high-pressure electrospray, field desorption and superheated ESI, and the strategies to...

In the current context of international conflicts and localized terrorist actions, there is unfortunately a permanent threat of attacks with unconventional warfare agents. Among these, biological agents such as toxins, microorganisms, and viruses deserve particular attention owing to their ease of production and dissemination. Mass spectrometry-based techniques for the detection and quantification of biological agents have a decisive role to play for countermeasures in a scenario of biological attacks.

We are proud to announce a new series of educational webinars run in collaboration with Chromedia, COAST, and SciMind, a product of the American Chemical Society. These webinars will build into a must-have set of tutorial materials for the analytical scientist.

Developments in Analysis of Drugs and Metabolites in Skeletal Remains

Date: Dec 6, 2016 - 15:00

Bone remains are one of the least characterized and most challenging matrices for forensic toxicological analysis. Before the forensic utility of the matrix may be fully realized, controlled experiments must be carried out. This presentation will highlight the value that UPLC-based approaches have brought to the drug analysis of bone samples. In addition, we will discuss the most recent findings in analytical developments using UPLC-QTof mass spectrometry, including: dramatic enhancements in sensitivity,...
