Gemini handheld chemical analyzer The Gemini handheld chemical analyzer from Thermo Fisher Scientific has received a 2016 Edison Awards gold medal for forensics and security. The Edison Awards recognize excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design and innovation.

“We are proud that our ground-breaking technology has been recognized by such a prestigious organization,” said Julie Planchet, vice president/general manager, portable analytical instruments for Thermo Fisher. “The Edison Awards honor technological innovation that makes a positive impact on the world. This brings further validation that the Gemini analyzer is making a powerful difference in supporting our mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. This is a great honor for the Gemini product team and for our company as a whole.”

The Gemini analyzer is the world’s first handheld instrument to integrate Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. It is a rugged, lightweight instrument designed to allow bomb technicians, hazmat teams, first responders and military personnel to safely, accurately and rapidly identify unknown chemicals and explosives in the field.

In addition to the 2016 Edison Award, the Gemini analyzer has also earned: 2015 R&D 100 and Editor’s Choice honors (see Thermo Fisher chemical analyzer wins R&D 100 Award); a Bronze Innovation Award at Europoltech in the Supermodern 2015 Programme; a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing All-Star Innovators Award in the “Analytical and Monitoring Devices” category; and “Highly Commended” recognition as part of the ADS Security Innovation Awards 2015 at the Security and Policing Conference in the UK.
